Evacuated Tubes

Does solar hot water work?

The simple answer is, yes.

If you have ever climbed into a car that has been sitting in the sun you will appreciate the accumulative effects of solar radiation. technology has developed this principle to enable us to harness solar radiation even on days that feel quite cool to enable us to reduce our carbon footprint and lead to reduced heating bills.

Solar hot water - how does it work?

Put simply; solar hot water works when good quality light energy falls on a surface. Fluid in contact with that surface carries the energy away to a store of water. You can draw off that water (now full of heat energy) at the hot tap.

The evacuated tube system uses an evacuated copper tube as a core with a small amount of water sealed inside. As the suns energy heats the tube the water evaporates carrying the heat energy to a copper bulb at the top. A double walled, evacuated tube made from toughened glass with a high tech, energy absorbing coating both absorbs the energy and protects the core from wind chill, just like a hot drinks flask. Metal fins inside transfer the energy to the core. The tube plug into a manifold. A heat transfer fluid takes the heat away to a storage cylinder, accumulating the heat energy and storing it until needed. The fluid in the circuit is always kept separate from that in the storage cylinder and that in the tubes.

Free solar energy; reduced heating bills.

Evacuated tubes, what are the benefits?

We offer panels of evacuated tube s. The advantages of this method are:

They react quickly to the fickle light levels we often have in the UK taking advantage of any shorter periods of good quality light to provide you with solar hot water.

The tubes are tough and maintenance free.

In the unlikely event of damage to an evacuated tube, they are easily replaceable without having to drain the system down. As a small array would be expected to have twenty tubes a damaged tube would have little effect on the performance of the system until the tube could be replaced.

It is reasonable to expect usable hot water from March through to October. You can still use the system during the winter months but will have to top up the heat to varying degrees with either your gas boiler or an immersion heater. As more energy is used raising the water temperature from lower temperatures Using solar in the winter months can also lead to reduced heating bills.
